Fast Rustic Burlap Banners!

I recently made some super-fast burlap banners for my friend's rustic wedding reception.
Want to see some of them?

So many banners around the room, calls for fast, lightening quick banner making!

No exact measuring, no bias tape, no fancy stenciling tricks or precise sewing.
When you go with the rustic theme, it really allows you the freedom to NOT be exact--love that!

Here's the fast way:

1) Cut pennants out of burlap.
I went with a simple triangle shape.
I cut one triangle out of cardstock and used it as my pattern.
I traced around the pattern and cut them out of the burlap 2 at a time.

2)  Make stencils.
I didn't find any stencils I liked in the store, so I cut out my own on the Cricut.
It was nice to make them the font and size I wanted.
(I made 3 different pennant sizes, so I needed different sized letters.)

3)  Line stencil on pennant.
I made a little template showing where I wanted the top of the burlap
and the top of the letter to be.
It's fairly important to have the letters centered evenly on the pennants.
(You could use a ruler, but it's faster to make your own 'guide'.)

4)  Use craft paint and a foam brush.  Nothing fancy here.
A stencil paint brush works well, but I didn't have one.

5)  Apply paint with a dabbing motion.
If your stencil moves too much, use Painter's tape to tape it down, then add the paint.
I was in quick mode, so I just held the stencil with my fingers.

6)  After paint is dry, run a line of hot glue on the back of the pennant.
I made my line about 1/2 inch down from the top.

7)  Lay your twine, ribbon or string on the glue.

8)  Run another line of hot glue and fold the burlap over the twine.
Press down until it holds.
Trim off edges.

A few helpful tips...that I just happen to know from lots of mistakes!
-Paint all the letters on the pennants before gluing them together.
(That way if you make a mistake, you don't have to redo a whole banner.)
-Lay out the letters face down in order from right to left, then glue on the twine.

If you don't do this, you'll end up with a banner that says, STFIG.  Ever heard of it?  No?

How about GIFTS?

-Try to space out the twine between the pennants evenly.  Cut a piece of cardstock and use it as a guide.

On last tip...
-If you'd like a small word to look bigger, add hearts to each end.

I'm still working on all the pictures from the wedding reception, so be sure to come back and check in.

Have a 'banner' of a day!
