Wednesday

For the past several months, my 10 year old daughter has been having trouble getting to sleep.  She tells my husband and I-- that she's scared.  She can't explain exactly what she's scared of, but she 'just is.'  She's been double checking the locks on the doors and windows because something scary could come in.  She's been spending hours awake, not able to relax and sleep. We have tried everything to calm her down!  Special prayers, Bible reading, night lights, sleeping with the lights on, new pillows, different beds, music playing, white noise playing, set bedtime routine, warm baths, door open, door closed, later bedtime, earlier bedtime, no movies or books that may have scary things, no TV, no screen time before bed, etc. etc. etc.
(Can you sense my exhaustion with this matter?)

Well, after much prayer and basically 'crying' out to God for help,
prayers were answered with this notebook idea.

Yes, it sounds crazy, but this 'FEAR NOT NOTEBOOK' has really made a difference!  Take a look!

We took the 'use what you got' and the 'get it done, quick' approach with this notebook.

Using old magazines, we ripped out pages of pictures that brought my daughter happiness and joy.
She loves animals, oceans, flowers, fields, etc.
We also cut out words that would bring a sense of calmness.

Words like: rest, bloom, relax, sleep, love, rejoice.

We already had a small yellow binder (7"x 9") that worked perfectly.

Next came the assembling.
We taped (yes, good old Scotch tape) the magazine pictures and words right onto a piece of hole punched paper (5 1/2"x 8 1/2").

We then looked up Bible verses that had to do with God's protection, peace and sleep and wrote them on the pages.
Here's a look at some of the pages we made.

I lay down and slept yet I woke up in safety. For the Lord was watching over me.
Psalm 3:5

I will lay down in peace and sleep, for you O Lord will keep me safe.
Psalm 4:8

Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?
Matthew 6:26

But my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19

Do not worry...  Matthew 6:25

On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.
Psalm 63:6

In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:6

Be careful for nothing but in everything let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

This page would totally GIVE me anxiety (8 babies holding juice on white carpet), but my daughter loves babies!
Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7

And this is the confidence that we have toward Him,
that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
1 John 5:14

We made about 15 pages and then put in a section of lined paper for my daughter to write down her prayers to God.
Her written prayers made me cry.
To see inside the mind of a very scared/confused adopted 10 year old...it's tough stuff for a mom.

We also put in an envelope to hold extra pictures and words to make more pages.

Using the Cricut cutting machine, we cut out vinyl letters to decorate the notebook.
(I used the Opposites Attract font cartridge.)

And of course, every project needs ribbon!  I punched three holes into the binder's spine.
(The Crop-o-dile punching tool is the best!)

Three different ribbons were threaded through the holes, tied into a double knot and trimmed.

It's been 3 weeks since we have made this notebook.
(It took me awhile to post this...not to mention that I wanted to see if this book actually worked.)
Week 1:  My daughter used this Fear Not Notebook every night.
She read through each page, wrote out a prayer to God AND went to sleep quickly!!
Week 2:  The Fear Not Notebook was only looked at once or twice with no troubles sleeping!
Week 3:  The Fear Not Notebook is sitting on her nightstand untouched!  She's sleeping effortlessly!

An answered prayer!

Now we may need this notebook again sometime...
so we're continuing to add new pages, photos and scriptures every so often...
Just so we're ready.

Sweet Dreams!

Tuesday

Every Friday morning (during the school year) at the home of a nearby friend, anywhere from 3-10 moms gather together and pray for our kids for one hour.  We come from many different Christian churches and denominations, but we have one thing in common--we believe in the power of prayer!

"The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles" Psalm 34:17.

We pray not only for our children and each others' children, but for our children's school, teachers, principal, classmates, safety, health, the lessons they're being taught, their school environment and more.  We pray specifically for any issues that our children are experiencing, whether it's attention problems, friend issues, recess concerns, homework struggles, test anxieties, learning difficulties, attitudes, behaviors, etc.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1

Each week we share answered prayers and praises; and each week we are blown away by God's mighty power at work in our children's lives and in their school.

We use a pre-printed form like this one, to guide us through scripture when praising, thanking and praying our requests out to Him.  This past week, we gathered and praised God for being holy, perfect, pure and deserving adoration.

We prayed that our children would walk in faithfulness and devotion as we prayed Isaiah 38:3 over them.

"O lord, may my child walk before you faithfully, with wholehearted devotion and (do) what is good in your eyes."

What a great scripture to pray for our children who are living in this world with so many choices and decisions to make at such an early age.  Will they make their decisions based on what the world is doing or will they make their decisions 'faithfully' with a 'wholehearted devotion' to God?  As a parent, I can't be sure how my children will choose to live and what choices they'll make, but I can choose to cover them with the power and the protection of prayer.

Our group is called  Moms In Touch International.  Thousands of schools across the country and the world have MITI (Moms In Touch International) groups praying.
Wouldn't you like to have prayer protection over your child's school?  Better yet, wouldn't you like to give God all the worries and anxieties that you have for your child?
Wouldn't you like to have scripture prayed over your child and then be witness to God's power at work in their life?
You can
click here to find out if your child's school has a MITI group already meeting.
MITI's goal is to have every school in the world covered in prayer.
Will you consider starting a group or joining a group to make a difference in your child's school and their life?  A 1 hour, weekly commitment is such a small gift that will result in such a huge reward for our children.
"Whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight." 1 John 3:22

Monday

The most dangerous activity I do everyday is get in my car and drive. (Yes, I lead a pretty calm life...and no, I'm not a crazy, speedster!) When I first get into my car I always say a quick prayer of , "God keep us safe."  If I happen to be venturing into Seattle I like to add, "and please help me not to get lost."
One of my friends got rear-ended the other day on a nearby busy street.  Apparently, a teen driver wasn't paying attention to all the stopped up traffic and ran right into the back of her stopped car.  Thankfully, she is OK.  She's in a bit of pain, but I'm thanking God that her children were not with her and that she was safe.  There's a bit of damage to her car, but really could have been much, much worse.
This incident reminded me of that old Amy Grant song: Angels Watching Over Me. Although her video is ridiculous, I love the words to this song. 'Though I never see with human eyes, the hands that lead me home...' One of my favorite angel verses from the Bible is Psalm 91:11 For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

Sticking with the angel theme here... I just so happened to be in college right around the time that angels were really popular. (Yes, that was awhile ago, but then again so was that Amy Grant song!)  It seemed like angels were the 'in' thing.  Printed on posters, pillows, bookmarks, T-shirts, notepads, you name it!  I had always liked angels as a child, so when angels starting popping up on things, I started collecting them.  My dorm room in college was full of the typical angel decor.  Family and friends would give me angel knickknacks and gifts.  My first apartment was filled with angel paraphernalia!  I actually had my mother-in law help me put up an angel wallpaper border in the bathroom of our first home!  It's true! (Did I mention I have an amazing mother-in-law and an awesome husband?  He lived with that angel bathroom for years!)
Well, most of those angel things have been tossed out, given away or in the wallpaper's case--'steamed off'.  Ha!  But don't worry, I still like angels.  Every December our Christmas tree is full of mostly angel ornaments that I adore, given to me by family and friends.  Come to think of it, I still have a few angel pillows that I put out as well, oh and some Christmas angel wall hangings...and...and...

I will always love angels, especially the image of God's angels protecting me as I'm driving, lifting me up in their hands so I will not be hurt. It brings me great comfort to know that angels are watching my every step. The scripture says they are commanded by God to guard and protect US! Yes, God has commanded them to watch over us! Not because of what we are, what we do, or what we say, but because we love Him! That's it! Because we love Him, we are important to Him. Looove this!
I wrote out a prayer using some of the words and promises from Psalm 91. I printed it out for my friend to have in her car to pray before she drives.

Here's the prayer card I made.

After printing out the words, I backed it onto cardstock and covered it with clear contact paper. I added an eyelet and tied a pretty ribbon to make a loop. It slips over the control stick in my car.

It reads:   As you start your day in the car,
                                                from Psalm 91.

Lord, I pray the promises of Psalm 91 over our family and ask you to command your angels to guard us in all our ways today.  May Your angels lift us up in their hands and keep us safe as we go about our day.  Because we love You, Lord and have acknowledged Your name, You have promised to rescue us and protect us.  When we are in troubles, we will call upon Your name.  We trust that You will answer us and be with us always.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reciting this scripture or praying it aloud to God, doesn't mean that we will never get in a car wreck or never get hurt in an accident. Praying scripture allows us to trust and be comforted in God's promises that no matter what He allows to happen, He will protect us and rescue us and will be with us in all our times of troubles....And yes, this means He'll be there even when I'm completely lost in Seattle!
